I recently had a literature review posted on Dr. Thistle’s Research Review Service;

Concurrent Endurance and Strength Training Not to Failure Optimizes Performance Gains

Izquiredo-Gabarren M et al.

Pertinent Findings

  • The 4NRF group experienced larger gains in maximal strength and maximal power output, in absolute and relative terms, when compared with both 4RF and 2NRF (2 exercises not to repetition failure) groups
  • The 4NRF and the 2NRF groups improved W10strokes (power output in 10 maximal rowing strokes) and W20min (20 minute all-out row test) to a greater extent than the 4RF group
  • After the training period, significant increases were observed in 1RM prone bench pull, Wmax, and W(index) but only in the 4NRF group
  • Significant increases were observed in muscle power output at 75% and 85% of 1RM BP for the 4NRF group
  • Significant increases were observed in muscle power output with an absolute load corresponding to 70% of 1RM prone bench pull at pre-training for 4NRF and 2NRF, whereas no significant changes were observed in the 4RF group
  • Muscle power output with an absolute load corresponding the 70% of 1RM at pre- training, with a significantly larger magnitude of increase for 4NRF (13.1%) than that recorded in 4RF and 2NRF groups (1.3% and 7.9%, respectively)
