Critical Quality 2–Overcome Gravity

Physics dictates that all objects in motion are acting against the force of gravity.  Despite multiple forces that must be overcome, in upright cyclical running, the biggest concern is overcoming gravity’s tenacious effects.

What must we overcome?

Gravity is a bitch...

The most efficient and effective runners are able to produce significantly greater forces opposing gravity and are able to do so in less time (Weyand, 2010).  The development of adequate mass specific force (MSF), that is the amount of force one can produce at their given bodyweight is integral in developing ideal speed, running economy, and ultimately endurance (Storen, 2008; Weyand, 2000).

Neuromuscular components have been positively correlated with performance in distance events (Nummela, 2006; Paavolainen 1999a, 1999b, and 2000).  Appropriate athletic development programs including traditional and dynamic strength training, plyometric work, and coordinative training can improve the neuromuscular necessities for powerful distance performance.
